Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the zodiac, relating to surrender, loss or enlightenment. Due to its position in the last house, Pisces is associated with self-sacrifice, compassion, and gentleness. It speaks of patience and kindness, and the ability to heal. The sign Pisces denotes the sensitivity and intuition that comes with forbearance. However, it can also reflect the need to find ways to deal with its tremendous sensitivity.
The symbol for Pisces is two fish in constant motion, linked together but swimming in opposite directions. Related to the twelfth and final house, this sign confronts the existential reality that we are mortal and must eventually leave our body. We are aware that there is nothing left to do but surrender to the energy of the twelfth house, either with the feeling of liberation or loss. The twelfth house is often referred to as the house of Buddha. Given that Buddha experienced the infinite nature of life, his response to the energy of the twelfth house was one of serenity and liberation. The sensitivity of Pisces often manifests as trust and compassion. Consequently Pisces’s keyword is “I accept”. However, not all of us can recognize the infinite nature of life and tends to experience the energy of the twelfth house as a sense of loss or confusion. This response can make us vulnerable to escapism through alcohol, drugs, or the pursuit of sensory pleasures in an effort to dull the pain of our sensitivity.
Pisces is a feminine, yin, water sign, suggesting ultra-sensitivity, tenderness, vulnerability, and intuition. This mutable sign reflects an open, impressionable nature. Pisces is associated with the feet, reflecting the humility of this sign.
Jupiter, the planet of generosity and expansion, co-rules this sign with Neptune, an impersonal planet that is the higher octave of Venus. Both Venus and Neptune are associated with love. Whereas Venus’s energy includes love on a personal level, Neptune focuses on transcendent love that is marked by selfless concern for the welfare of others, expressed through poetry, the arts and healing professions. Ultimately, the mystical nature of Pisces may result in a state of nirvana—a love for the divine within, and for all humanity. Pisces relates to the potential of seeing the sacred in everything and, consequently, becoming the sign of the healer.
However, the otherworldly nature of Neptune can also result in illusion. What seems real may be unreal, and what seems unreal may be real. There is a tendency to deny the harsh realities of life by seeing it through rose-colored glasses. Mind-altering substances or systems may create an alternate reality filled with illusive dreams, hopes, wishes, and fantasies. Consequently, this alternate reality becomes a fog that provides relief by temporarily dulling the pain of reality.
Pisces energy is associated with the belief that everything is possible. However, we need to act upon our lofty ideas; otherwise, there is a danger of remaining in the foggy world of dreams and illusions.
Pisces is the most potentially creative, magnetic and powerful sign, giving expression to the house where it is located. Each of us has Pisces energy in our astrological chart. The sign Pisces is highlighted when it is found in one of the following three positions: when Pisces is the ascendant, when the Sun is in Pisces, or when the Moon is in Pisces. For example, Billy Graham has a Pisces ascendant; Edgar Cayce has the Sun in Pisces; and Bill Gates has the Moon in Pisces.
The mystical teachings say we have to perfect the lessons of all twelve signs. Like a school, sometimes we can skip a grade; sometimes we go back a grade. But we have to experience the energy of all twelve signs.
